I was perplexed by my decision last week to make public the havoc that TERNA is about to wreak on the Tuscan hills. But from your messages today I know that not only are you close to me in this – signing the petition – but you help me to go beyond… beyond myself… beyond the beloved hills… to understand how a profoundly spiritual man should take on, at a certain point, political awareness. Not as belonging to a party, but as taking on responsibility toward the common good. The world was not created to be violated, nor society to be unjust, but to be in harmony with man, just as man must stay in harmony with God. One of the fundamental characteristics of a meaning seeker is the radical break he or she makes when faced with the disrespectful and manipulative use of the world. IT IS THE DUTY to rebel against the bullying and violence of the powerful! And this kind of non-violent struggle, focused on the common good, frees, purifies, strengthens, and fills us with value and meaning. It makes you feel alive again. A TRUE WITNESS of your time. The time that you are living.
At a certain point of your existence you have to take a position, you cannot remain silent, complicit in the bullying. You are called in the first person to render your reflections and convictions alive and real … at times, a gray existence assumes meaning and value all of a sudden, redeeming itself in the high act of rebellion.
LET’S BECOME INDIGNANT! … and we shall live.
