Valerio Albisetti - Il viaggio della Vita

THE PERSPICACITY AND PERSEVERANCE OF THE SPIRITUAL PERSON

Perspicacity means seeing what’s behind words and appearances, taking the long view of things, and seeing them clearly and lucidly. The opposite of perspicacity is willful blindness.
Jesus gave us magnificent examples of perspicacity in the Scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 23:27 and Matthew 6:16), and in the Rich Man (Matthew 21:22), and He also gave us an overflowing fountain of suggestions on how to practice it.
The spiritual man knows how to pose questions and make inquires in appropriate ways without beginning at the end or conclusion and without burning bridges behind him, and he continues to persevere using this approach.
One striking thing that makes you reflect biblically is the number of persons who insist they’re believers, do effectively believe, and are convinced they’re at peace and in good standing with God.
The Bible, which associates belief with faith, says, in James 2:19, 20: “You believe in the one God – that is creditable enough, but even the demons have the same belief, and they tremble with fear. Fool! Would you not like to know that faith without deeds is useless?” And in John 17:3: “Eternal life is this: to know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
The demons believe and tremble because they have personally known God – His power and His nature when they were angels in heaven, and they chose ways opposite to God’s ways. They know well what their end will be and the end of those who follow in their footsteps.
The spiritual man knows that, before believing in someone, you have to know that person. And it is only in knowing and being with a person that one learns his nature and chooses to love him or not – and that can’t happen by taking another’s word for it. Make every attempt to know God, realizing that studying His Word is also a way of being with Him in order to be convinced of His qualities and drawn to love and follow Him. In the end this is what God wants most.
How many good people there are who call themselves believers without knowing and studying God’s attributes, without knowing that God has a name and that His name has great significance! They have a Bible that sleeps undisturbed on a shelf in their libraries or is stuffed in a corner among other untouched and forgotten things.
They don’t know that the Bible is really a collection of 66 letters written by God out of love for each of us -to make us true, spiritual men.
And, what’s more, God doesn’t ask us to do unusual and impossible things, but rather openly transparent and relatively simple things and to persevere in doing those things (cf., Micah 6:8 and
2 Timothy 2:15).
