KEEPING YOUR SPIRITUALITY AT A HIGH LEVEL

You never acquire spirituality once and for all. It needs to be looked after, cultivated and kept at a high level with constant attention in order not to lose it.
The world runs along on its own way and changes at an ever more rapid pace. In its changes it doesn’t take God or His values into account.
In order not to be unwittingly attracted by the events around us and to maintain at a high level our own spirituality, which we consider a treasure, we need God’s Word, ready at hand in a simple, clear synthesis.
It’s impossible to trust in our intelligence alone (1 Corinthians 3:19) because we are all imperfect beings, more or less influenced by the world in which we live.
Jesus furnished us with a Biblical synthesis, easy to use, which can serve as a filter or reference point to keep our spirituality at a high level. It consists of the two, principal commandments, on which the whole, divine law and the prophets depend. (1)
Do these help us filter our thoughts in order to understand what’s behind them and move us to act for love of God and of our neighbor, or do profit, personal interest, and love of money?
This question, together with another about the strength of our beliefs as we move into the future reign of God on earth, is of capital importance in maintaining our spirituality at a high level.
The spiritual man responds in the affirmative to the first question, while the carnal man and the great majority of the population answer the second question in the affirmative. (2)
As a consequence, the movement of a Christian toward the reign of God is a countercultural movement with respect to the great majority of persons in the world in which we live.
The spiritual man makes progress by putting God and love of neighbor in first place in his life, while considering money as merely a means to live and have the necessities of life, not as an end in itself. He knows that the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Reading the daily news, he understands who wields the real power in this world (1 John 5:19-20) – power that is manifested in the love of profit and the almighty buck with its inevitable consequences (2 Timothy 3:1-5).
The spiritual man prays to God as Jesus did: “…hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9, 10) He looks toward the future reign of God, which will resolve all human problems, while he safeguards and maintains his own spirituality at a high and ever higher level.
Footnotes
(1) (1) Matthew 22:37-40: “Jesus said to him, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets, too.”
(2) (2) Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and many take it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

(1 John 5:19, 20) “We are well aware that we are from God, and the whole world is in the power of the Evil One. He is the true God and this is eternal life.”
(2 Peter 3:13) “What we are waiting for, relying on his promises, are the new heavens and new earth, where uprightness will be at home.”

(Revelation 21:3-5) “…Look, here God lives among human beings. He will make his home among them; they will be His people, and He will be their God, God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness or pain. The world of the past has gone. Then the One sitting on the throne spoke. ‘Look, I am making the whole of creation new.’ Write this, ‘What I am saying is trustworthy and will come true.’”
