It’s noticeable in highly organized and complex societies that people are afraid of losing control of their lives. Over time we all get used to acquiring firm control of ourselves, allowing us to live well together in society, and that’s why self-control and courtesy are valued so highly, and why both are taught from the earliest childhood years. But that contributes to the wide diffusion of hypocrisy at all levels of society, since self-control means repressing every unpleasant impulse that could harm societal living. Then those impulses are buried in our unconscious minds and continue to exist and produce neurotic symptoms. Not only that, but strong self-control necessitates a marked expenditure of psychic energy and results in a certain rigidity in people. But eventually we become aware that a letting up of self-control makes the realization of our desires possible, whereas those who have strong self-control often live more or less cold, closed-in, and joyless lives – lives lacking emotional expression, heartless lives.

Paoline.
Grazie, Valerio!
